Why You Need a High Fence for a Greyhound or Lurcher

Updated October 8th, 2025

Although they may be one of the laziest dogs, don’t underestimate the athletic abilities of lurchers.

Most lurchers can easily jump heights of over 1.5 metres (about 5 ft) while younger, fitter lurchers can reach heights of 2 metres or more (about 6ft).

There’s good reason many rescues will want you to have high, secure fencing if rehoming a lurcher!

Consider 6ft fence panels as a minimum for most lurchers, with up to 8ft if you have a dog who particular likes to try to fly.

The Lurcher’s exceptional jumping ability starts with its unique physical build. The crossbreeding that results in a Lurcher typically aims to combine the sighthound’s speed and grace with the strength and stamina of other breeds.

This combination results in a dog that is both powerful and agile. Lurchers have a lean body, long legs, and a deep chest, all of which contribute to their ability to generate the power needed to propel themselves upwards.

Genetics play a significant role, as the physical attributes conducive to high jumping are inherited from their sighthound ancestry.

Additionally, the motivation behind the jump, whether it be chasing a toy or competing in agility sports, can affect how high the dog will leap.
