Exercising your lurcher

Updated October 8th, 2025

When it comes to how much exercise a lurcher needs the answer is quite simply “it depends”.

As a mixed breed, lurchers come in all different shapes and sizes. What they have in common is their sighthound ancestry, usually greyhound.

The sighhound DNA means that, generally speaking, lurchers are one of the more lazy dogs. Yes, they’re fast, but most will prefer to doze on the sofa. Similar to pure breed greyhounds, many lurchers can easily sleep for 16 or more hours a day.

However their mixed breed nature means that most will need to have more exercise than greyhounds as they will likely have much more stamina.

Most adult lurchers need at least a good hour of exercise a day, preferably more if they’re younger or more active, such as Collie x Lurchers.

Ideally you’ll want to give your lurcher the chance to have a good run a few times a week, alongside daily on-lead walks.

Remember that exercise isn’t just physical, lurchers like all dogs also need good mental stimulation.
